What Is the Defensive Pistol Series?
The Defensive Pistol Series is a bi-weekly training program focused on real-world defensive shooting in a dynamic, time-pressured environment.
Self-defense events are chaotic, fast, and unforgiving.
This program is designed to prepare shooters to perform cold, from concealment, under measurable standards — the only conditions that matter.
Primary Focus
- Defensive pistol proficiency
- Shooting from concealment
- Accuracy under time pressure
- Accountability through standards
Training Philosophy
Train like you fight.
Program Objective
The goal of the Defensive Pistol Series is simple and serious:
Enable survival in real-world violent encounters.
We do this by delivering a structured defensive pistol curriculum evaluated through timed drills, target scoring, and performance consistency.
What Proficiency Means
- Meeting defensive standards 90% of the time
- Shooting cold, with no warm-ups
- Performing from concealment
- Balancing speed and accountability
Speed without accuracy is meaningless.
Accuracy without time pressure is incomplete.
The Defensive Pistol Drills
Every training session includes evaluation against five core defensive pistol drills. These drills are shot every session, providing continuity, accountability, and measurable improvement.
Core Drills
- One Shot Drill
One shot to the A-zone from concealment @ 5 yards - Bill Drill
Six shots to the A-zone from concealment @ 7 yards - Three & Two Drill
Three shots center mass, two shots to the head box @ 3 yards - FAST Drill
Two shots to the head box, reload, four shots center mass @ 7 yards - Wilson 5×5 Drill
Four timed strings of fire @ 10 yards, including strong-hand-only and reload work
Target Scoring & Accountability
Targets are scored to defensive standards — not competition shortcuts.
Scoring Zones
- A-Zone: Hit
- B/C/D Zones: Miss (time penalties apply)
- Off-Target: Drill forfeit
Penalties
- B/C hits: +0.5 seconds each
- D hits: +1.0 second each
- Misses: Drill failure
Speed is useless if you can’t hit the target.
Performance Standards & Belt Levels
The Defensive Pistol Series uses a belt-based qualification system to track progression and proficiency.
Belt Levels
- Yellow Belt
Demonstrates basic defensive shooting fundamentals at ~40% consistency
Learning to run the gun - Green Belt
Demonstrates ~70% consistency
Learning how to fight with a pistol - Red Belt
Demonstrates ~90% consistency
Applying defensive shooting skills intuitively
This is not about ego.
It’s about honesty, progress, and competence.
Qualification Process
- Qualifications are voluntary
- Shooters must qualify cold
- No warm-ups allowed before qualification attempts
- All quals are run individually, on a timer, with accountability
- Shooters receive belt patches upon meeting standards
- Scorecards track progress session-to-session
You earn your level. Nothing is given.
